He edits Narrative magazine and is a former fiction editor of Esquire, advisory editor The Paris Review, senior editor at Scribner's, and literary editor of Gentlemen's Quarterly.

He has given classes at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, the Creative Writing Programs at University of California (Irvine and Davis), Washington University in St. Louis, the Squaw Valley and Bennington Summer Writing Workshops and, privately, in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

	The Garden of Eden by Ernest Hemingway Papa's best-selling, posthumously published, final novel. Unfinished at the time of Hemingway's death in 1961, the manuscript versions of The Garden of Eden stretched to thousands of pages and had resisted attempts to edit it until Tom Jenks brought it to trade publication in 1986.
